How can I explain meditation to a child: Start will Simple phrases like
“We’re going to sit still and find your calm Place" or "We're going to sit a breathe together"
How long should we meditate: Try and start with 5 Mins and increase from there. 5 Mins of stillness can change the energy of a child.
How frequently should I meditate with my child: The more the better. We honor each child is different. If your child is high energy a meditation a day can work wonders. Choosing a frequency is up to what your family needs or could benefit from. The patterns you put in place now will remind them as they grow and give them a mindful practice that can be maintained with literally nothing other than sitting down and closing their eyes.
What if I can’t get my child to sit down? This is normal as you begin to share with your child what meditation exactly is, if your child is still a toddler you can start by putting them in their stroller/carriage or something stationary and put on soft meditation music. As they are in their stroller/stationary object explain to them we’re taking a moment out to relax our minds and find our calm place.
If your child is a little older and no longer fits into a stroller or carrier, you can join them where they are and begin to shift the mood of the space their in by playing light meditative music on your phone and asking them to breathe with you.
